Now Here, HO Scale CNR J-3-a/b kit!
CNR HO Scale J-3-a/b Pacific Kit. There will be 4 J-3-a kits and 11 J-3-b kits, only 15 kits in total!
This kit is made up of brass etchings, MLW brass castings, Cal Scale brass castings, Precision Scale brass castings, various sizes of brass rod, NWSL 9 spoke engine truck wheels, a can motor and a Bowser USRA mechanism with 69" drivers. Sadly, Bowser is no longer producing mechanisms so when these are gone, that's it.
The J-3-a class, (5030 - 5048) was built by Baldwin in 1912 for the GTR in Canada. In 1924 all were transferred to the GTW for use in the US. The GTW replaced the bolted tender frames with cast ones, applied 8 1/2" Cross Compound Pumps and welded tenders. In 1942/43 seven of these were purchased for use on the CNR. 5031, 5033, 5037, 5040, 5041, 5044, and 5045. The welded tenders were replaced by riveted ones when the seven went to the CNR.
The J-3-b class, (5049 - 5079) was built by Montreal Locomotive Works in 1913 for the GTR in Canada. For the most part, they retained their bolted tender frames and 11" single phase air pumps. Only two J-3-b's received Elesco Feedwater Heaters, 5564 and 5577.
By 1940, there were many variations in this class from where the boiler check was mounted to how the running boards were mounted. The kit provides detailed step by step instructions that are second to none in the construction of this loco and give as much information as possible on which prototype number had which specific variations. The modeler can build whichever particular prototype they desire.
The J-3 class Pacific is virtually the same as the K-3 class aside from the difference in driver diameter. The J-3 had 69" while the K-3 had 73". Although the K-3 enjoyed many types of valve gear, the J-3 only used Walshaerts.
Because so few kits are being produced, a J-3 pilot model is not being built. Please view the pictures of the CNR K-3 models as to what to expect from this kit but with smaller diameter drivers.
The first 2 pictures are of our pilot model CNR K-3-a 5563, built by Andrew Malette. The next 8 photos are of CNR K-3-b 5588, being built by Duane Drouillard. Excellent work Duane! The final two shots are of CNR K-3-a 5565 built by master custom builder John Morris for Shaun Arthur. Thanks for the pictures fellows.
